DOC EDWARDS LEAGUE BASEBALL

There are three teams in the American League race now. The on coming object in the rear view mirrors of Anaheim and Seattle is the Toronto Trudeaus. The Trudeaus have won four straight, nine of ten and outscored the opposition 60-29, an unbelievable plus 31 margin.

The Trudeaus are hitting.256 bas a team with 22 homeruns and 145bruns batted in. The pitching staff has a staff ERA of 3.63. The hitting leaders are first baseman Tony Daugherty (.396 6 27), left fielder Fred Marshall (.422 2 13), and shortstop Dick Gooch (.262 3 14).

The leading pitchers are SP Dale Doll (4-0 2.72), SP Scott Trowbridge (3-0 3.28), and SP Rich Kennedy (3-1 3,69).in the bullpen Bill Mickelson (0-0 1.54) 4 saves and Scott Porray (3-0 1,74) have put up some eye catching numbers.

TOTONTO 3 SEATTLE 1

Toronto continued its upward climb with a 3-1 victory over fellow contender Seattle.

Larry Barker (2-5) got the win (8 innings 4 hits 1 run 1 walk 3 striukeouts). Closer Terry Mangus picked up save number four with a scoreless ninth inning.

Toronto took a 2-1 lead in the 6th inning on a double by Dick Gross that tied the game. 1-1 Fred Marshall's RBI single gave them a 2-1 lead. They added their final run in the 8th inning on Tony Daughtery's homerun.

George Daly accounted for the only Seattle run with a solo shot, his 6th, in the 4th inning.

Baltimore 8 Tampa 2

Joe Kress went nine innings gave up ten hits snd two runs struck out six and walked three to keep Tampa cruisong towarf the number one draft choice at the end of the season.

Julio Dougherty drove in five of Baltimore's eight runs with a sacrifice fly in the 2nd inning, a three run homerun off Ed Lavagetto in the 4th inning , and his second of the game and 5th of the season in the 7th off Phil Weiser.

Bob Suhr had an outstanding game in another losing effort for Tampa. Suhr had three hits kncluding two doubles and his 7th homer (8 total bases). Suhr is hitting .345 with 7 homers and 19 runs batted in.

Suhr would make a great pick up for a contender if Tampa chooses to add for the future.

TEXAS 4 NEW YORK 2

The misery contiunues for the New York BadBoys who have just flat out just been bad of late. The loss was their 8th straight. When they won last they were 17-6 and perched rather comfortably in first place. Things have turned sour very fast.

Roy Foxen was a bright spot for NewYork hit his 7th homerun, the first with no one on base in the 3rd inning and adding a run scoring single in the 7th.

Sid Chapman drove in two runs for aTexas with a ground out and a sacrifice fly.

The winning pitcher Hector Davis (3-3) drove in a run with a in the 3rd inning after Marv McMacklin had tripled.

Dave Belk had a run scoring single in the 4th inning.

Angels 4 Oakland 3

Marion, the winning pitcher 3-1. Loss goes to Stemmeyer 1-1.

1st inning …. Mike Marion gave up a single to Fred McNeil. Mike Lachowicz grounded into a double play started bysecond baseman Troy Uhlaender. Marion walked Campy Campaneris then struck out Norm Shoffner.


Arnold Guante struggled through his first inning as well. He walked Ossie Gilhooley. Tom Kearns forced him at second (4-6). Paul Dillon flied to right field. Jim Nixon lined a two out single to left but Uhlaender struck out leaving two runners on base.


The game was scoreless going into the 4th inning when both teams scored three runs.

Dick Oster hit a two run homerun for Oakland and Howie Reid drove in a run with a single.


Oakland did not hold on to the lead very long. Anaheim scored three times in the bottom of the inning to tie the game 3-3. Don Lary tripled with no one out. Les Raydon singled...3-1... Todd Campau's single sent Raydion to third base...he scored from there on a deep sacrifice fly caught on the warning track in right field by Lachowicz....3-2...Consecutive hits by Gilhooley anmd Kearns scored the thrid run...3-3...


Marion held Oakland scoreless for the remainder of his outing on two hits and he pitched aroiund an error. Guarte was equally stingy until he issued a lead off walk to Paul Dillon in the 5th inning... He also walked Les Raydon with one out in the 6th..

A single to the pitcher Mike Marion got him replaced by Bucky Stemmeyer in the 7th. Stemmeyer pitched around that hit getting a big double play.

Stemmeyer created a problem for himself in the 8th when he allowed singles by Dillon and Nixon putting runer on the corners with no outs.A sacrifice fly by Uhlaender put Anaheim ahead 4-3.

Dick Vasquez replaced Stemmeyer to stop tjhe bleeding but it was too late. Charlie Vines was impressive in his second outing as closer striking out two of three batters for his 2nd save.
