The Houston Oilers own a four game lead in the National league over the second place Pittsburgh Pirates and are six games in front of San Francisco as the season goes into its sprint to the finish. Houston as been led by their four All Star players that include starting pitchers Erik Ferris (9-3 2.56) and Tim Laker (10-2 1.85) second baseman Sam Behrman (11Hrs 40 RBI .315), and right fielder Rudy Pignatano (11 30RBI .291).

The 41-26 Oilers are 5-4 head to head against Pittsburgh, 5-1 at home and 0-3 in Pittsburgh with a series on the horizon in the Steel City on September 19 20, and 21 that will be vital for the Pirates.

The Oilers began a series with Mets with whom they are 9-2 this season, 5-1 at home, 4-1 in New York.

Erik Ferris started for the Oilers in game one against Chuck Dowling. houston ripped into Dowling for three runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Dowling gave up a single to Sam Behrman and walked the next two batters, Milt Firevold and Ray Griffin to load the bases. Lyman Rostos lined a double to left that skipped by Dan Rickey letting both Behrman and Firevold to score. Ross Leach singled to drive in Griffin with the third run.

3-0 Houston.

The Oilers added on a run in the 4th on three straight singles by Andy Bates, Erik Ferris and Al Welch to make it 4-0.

New York scored a run in the in the top of the 5th inning on a single by Ben Murphy, a stolen base and a RBI single by Jim Rivera.

Ross leach's two run homerun uped the lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the 5th inning. Leach homered off Dowling and that was it for him --replaced by Eddie Schultz.

Vince Fitzgerald's base loaded double that scored Jim Rivera (single), Scott Bagwell (infield single) and Bob Charboneau (BB) closed the gap to 6-4 for New York.

Rudy Pignatano hit his 11th of the sdeason in the 8th inning off Ossie korwan to complete the scoring.

Ramon Kaiser cloesed out the 9th inning for his 17th save.
