The frustrating season of Tampa Bay and Hard Luck Howard

Post by jacktoast »

The Tampa bay Tuna player say they hate the signs fans have put up at their home games that were inspired by the ''Charlie the Tuna'' commercial line; ''Sorry Charlie, only the best tuna ever win games''. The last place Tampa team has struggled mightily this season posting a league worst 22-48 record.

However, the difference was a slightly better record (32-48) and finiushed in 7th place as well as three All Star players that gave fans encouragement that better things were ahead.

Shortstop Earl Case woin the Gold Glove at his position and batted .304 with 10 homeruns and 38 RBI.

This season Case has batted .249 with 6 homeruns and 13 runs batted in and has 12 errors in the field.

Bob Suhr was the All Star third baseman with a.281 batting average, 14 homerun and 47 runs batted in.

This season Suhr started strong batting .326 with 12 homeruns over the first 42 games, but has faded drastically, batting .234 since .

The most notable of the fall offs has been starting pitcher Elmer Howard, the 32 year old right hander from Coos Bay, Oregon.

Howard has been nicknamed "Hard Luck'' by both teammates and opponents alike because a look at his game logs would tell you clearly that Howard has not taken a step back at all, but has been the victim of his team's fall off in performance.

Howard has a dismal 2-11 record. The eleven losses is the most in the American League. Howard has a 3.53 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP in 112.1 innings pitched, 100 strikeouts, 31 walks... .Opponents are batting .238 against him with 9 homeruns.

If that does not tell you the story, consider this; Howard has gone at least eight innings in his last four starts and five of his last six allowing only one run in the last four and 10 total over those games. Over all his 16 starts, Howard has gone seven or more innings in eleven of them.

''You have to keep you team in the game to give them a chance to win and I have done that to some extent this year but obviously not well enough. There are no moral victories in baseball in addition to no crying'' said Howard. ''To be optimistic things might turn around for us next season.''
