The Anaheim Angels clinched the American League pennant on September 20th at Vigilante Stadium with a 2-1 victory of the Texas Southern. Rookie right hander Marshall Ashford pitched one of his best games right after one of his worst of the season to get the win, 5-0. Ashford went eight solid innings gave up six hits and one run with one walk and a season high ten strikeouts.

The last hit Texas managed was a lead off single in the bottom of the 4th inning by Ted Bettencourt. Ashford turned a 2-1 lead over to Charlie Vines in the 9th and for the 25th consecutive time Vines protected the lead for the win.

Anaheim scored their first run in the first inning on Ossie Gilhooley's 6th homerun of the season.

Texas tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the 3rd inning on singles by Bill Strunk and Red Johnson.

The Angels took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 4th. Paul Dillon singled, stole second base, and scored on Jim Nixon's double to right field.

Texas 4 Anaheim 2

Texas took game three of the series to snap the Angels ten game winning streak. The Angels had celebrated their pennant clinching long into the night before this game and seemed a bit effected by it and not all that interested in the game.

Scott Donovan did care and he went six innings (4-1) gave up 8 hits and 2 runs walked one and struck out four. Al Morogiello took care of the last three frames for Texas for a rare three inning save (number three for Morogiello)

Tom Fritz hit his 4th homerun in the 5th inning for Texas.

Harl Loucks had run scoring single in the 1st inning and a two run double in the 5th inning for Texas for three runs batted in in the game.

Angels 4 Oakland 2

Anaheim returned home for a three game series with Oakland and picked up their 29th home win (29-5) at Albie Pearson Park and they are 24-15 away for a 53-20 record, a .726 winning percentage. The Pythagorean win percentage is .651. Pythagorean winning percentage is a system devised by Bill James where you do a bunch of things according to runs scored and runs against. I don't understand it at all but it does say that the Toronto club which is 4-5 against Anaheim might just have a good chance to beat them in the ALCS.

Larry Casey went 7.1 innings allowed 6 hits and 2 earned runs, gave up 2 walks and had 2 strikeouts to put his season's record at 6 wins and 3 losses and an ERA of 2.81.

Dick Anderson, of Oakland, got in 6 innings, gave up 6 hits and 3 runs, 2 0f them were earned, did not walk anyone and struck out 5. Anderon is 2-5 for the season with a 3.54 ERA.

Fank Adams got the final two outs of the 8th inning. Adams was making hios 29th appeaance and has a ERA of 0.89, a 5-1 record in 31IP 5 runs allowed 10 walks 23 strikeouts) The opposition is batting .188 against Adams with no homeruns..

Charlie Vines oicked up his 25th consecutive save in the 9th. Vines has made 39 appearances pitched 47.1 innings allowed just foive runs on 27 hits, has 41 strikeouts and has given up 7 walks. Opponants are hitting .170 agaisnt him with 2 homeruns and his ERA is now 0.99

Anaheim scored two runs in the 1st onning on a single by Gilhooley, stolen base #16 and a run scoring singe by first baseman Don Lary. Lary scored the second run on an error by second baseman Tracy Coakley.

Oakland scored its lone run in the second on Mile Lachowicz's 7th homerun coming off Casey (number 8 allowed in 121,2 innings pitched.
