The first place Houston Oilers are steam rolling down the stretch in the national League having just bagged ten straight wins.

They swept the Braves; 3-0, 5-1 and 7-5.

They swept the Mets; 3-0, 7-4 and 9-8 in 11 innings.

Houston is just 2-5 in extra innings this season.

Then they went to Pittsburgh and swept the Pirates 5-4,7-5 and 4-1.

Eight pitchers have won games during the streak; Starting pitcher Erik Ferris is 2-0 in the streak and 9-3 for the season. The other Oiler starters Deacon Barragan is 5-3 for the season and 1-0 in the winning streak, Tom Laker, 10-2 and 1-0, Rick Kaiser is 6-1 and 1-0, and Jack Gentile is 5-8 and 1-0. Releif pitcher Ray Tipton has two wins during the winning streak and is 3-0 on the season. Relievers Jorge MacCormack (2-3) and Bill Donahue (1-1) each have one win.

Johnny Webb is the scheduled starter in game two and he has the chance oto clinch fiorsrt place since the magic number is dwon to one.

Tim Laker started game one and did not get his 11th win going 6.2 innings giving up 9 hits and 4 runs with 4 waks and 7 strikeouts.


The chance for a tenth straight win looked kind of bleak for most of the game. San Francisco took a 3-0 lead in the first three innings off Laker.
In the bottom of the 3rd inning Johnny Ripley hit a two run homerun off San Francisco starting pitcher matt Davis. Davis went eight innings allowing four runs on six hits.

The Giants Chuck Richard hit his 17th, a solo homerun, in the 7th off Laker to up the score to 4-2...7th off Laker in 121.1 innings.

Ramon Kaiser gave up a solo homerun to Chas Perkins (7th) in the 8th...5-2...5th off Kaiser in 38 innings.

Ray Tipton surrendered a solo homerun to Tim Trevino (8th) in the 9th..1st off Tipton in 7.1 innings.

Matt Davis faced two men in the 9th and gave up singles to Ross Leach and Rudy Pignatano putting runners on first and third with no outs.

Cliff Lee took over for the Giants.

Andy Bates singled in Leech...6-3...

Pinch hitter Billy OParker singel in Pignatano...6-4...

John Ripley homered earlier but flied out to center field in this at bat...

Sam Behrman did go deep to left field...his 15th this season...with two on base for a surprising 7-6 win! That was the twnth straight win and that reduced the magic number to ONE.
