Texas Southern 6 Baltimore 5

(10 Innings)

Texas is 2-0 in extra innings this season, Baltimore dropped to 0-2, both coming in their last two games, the first a 4-3 loss to Tampa Bay in the finale of that series.

Texas Southern off to a 15-4 start kept their winning ways going with a 6-5 in over Baltimore (9-10), handing the Tigers their second straight loss. Japanese import Ikuo Matsumoto, the first round draft pick steal by the Texas franchise, made the start for Texas opposing Hector Lewis.

Matsumoto went 6 innings gave up 4 hits and 2 runs, both earned, walked 2 and struck out 7.

Lewis went 5.1 innings gave up 2 runs on 4 hits, but had control problems walking 6 and fanning four, all called third strikes. Baltimore used five pitchers from their bullpen and Texas two.

There were five homeruns in this game one by Baltimore, a pinch hit three run homerun by Turner Wilhelm, his second of the season, off lefthander Frank Gehring, in the top of vthe 9th. It was the first homerun allowed by Gehring in 8.2 innings pitched this season. Wilhelms blast to deep right center fierld ied the game 5-5 forcing extra innings.

Texas hit five homers in the game. The first was a solo shot by Mitchell Anderson in the first inning off Lewisgiving Texas a 1-0 lead.

Baltimore came right back in the top of the 2nd with two runs on a triple by Doc Ott, a walk to Bill Bladt, and run scoring singles by Julio Dougherty and pitcher Hector Lewis to take a 2-1 lead.

Ted Bettencourt hit his 3rd of the season off Lewis (second allowed by Lewis and both in this game) to tie the game 2-2.

There was no more scoring in the gsame until the 7th inning when Steve McDonald, fresh into the game, gave up back to back homeruns to Harl Loucks (3rd) and Henry Gilbert (2nd) to put Texas ahead 4-2. Loucks and Gilbert were the only batters McDonald faced.

Right hander Gene McKeel replaced McDonald and promptly got into trouble himself because of control issues. McKeel walked Tom Fritz and hit both Lou Murphy and Red Johnson to load the bases with one out before escaping by getting pinch hitter Sid Chipman to ground into an inning ewnding double play started by third baseman Charlie Brooks.

Texas extending their lead to 5-2 in the 8th inning on Mitchell Anderson's second homerun of the game, 6th for the season, in the 8th inning coming off righthander Gene McKeel (first given up).

Then Wilhelm stunned the crowd in the 9th inning with his pinch hit magic setting up extra innings. Texas took the game in the bottom of the 10th handing righthander Billy Moser his second loss oin three decisions. Moser allwed a lead off double to Mike Witted off the center field wall. and Mitchell Anderson won it for Texas with a sharply hit groundball past the desperate but futile dive off first baseman Doc Ott that scored Witted without a throw.

Note;

Anderson, 22 years old, the 1950 AL Rookie of the Year, was the star of the game going three for six with two homeruns, and the game winning single plus handling five chances in the outfield flawlessly

Anaheim 6 Toronto 5

The homestanding Anaheim Angels and the Toronto Trudeaus met for the first time since the Angels downed the Trudeaus 5-4 in the 6th games of the ALCS to advance to the World Series. The Toronto ballclub has struggled so far this season posting a 9-12 record, eight games off the pace tied for last place with Tampa.

Two of the pitchers involved in that game, Frank Roberts, the 1951 Cy Young Award Winner, and the Fireman of the year, Charlie Vines, played instrumental roles in this game. Roberts started and logged 8 innings giving up 6 hits and five runs. Only three were earned due to two errors. Roberts walked just one and had a season high 10 strikeouts.

Kennedy went the distance for Toronto and as usual against Anmaheim had little luck. He allowed six runs on 12 hits but only one was earned due to a pivotal two out error by shortstop Dick Gooch in the 7th inning tht allowed the pitcher Frank Roberts to reach base.

The Angels took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Bobby Slocumb had a groundball single to centerfield off Kennedy. Don Lary grounded into a double play started by shortstop Dick Gooch. Paul Dillon singled and stole second base. Tom Kearns' line drive to rightfield drove him in.

Toronto rocked Roberts for three runs on three hits in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. Tony Daugherty and GAeorge Krivda singled putting runners on first and third with no outs. Ray Wilson's fly ball to centerfield scored Dougherty. Terry Becker struck out but Vic Mihalic lauched his second homer of the season and second hit off Roberts to put the Trudeaus up 3-1.

Anaheim threatoned in the fourth inning but Mihalic threw out Jim Rondeau at the plate to end the inning and keep the score the same. (9-2 double play).

Toronto added to its advantage to 5-1 in the 7th inning by scoring two unearned runs off Roberts when Anaheim's middle infielders each committed an error. Second baseman Bobby Slocum, subbing for injured Troy Uhlaender, botted a groundball hit by Becker with one out and Walt Windhorn, filling in for regular shortstop Davy Marquard, being rested, made a two base throwing error putting Becker on third base and pitcher Rick kennedy on second with two outs. The next batter, Toronto centerfielder Paul Beard, made those miscues hurt, with a two run single.

Anaheim had a reply in their half of the 7th inning and it came after there were two outs. Pitcher Frank Roberts surprisingly batted for himself and reached on an error by Toronto shortstop Dick Gooch.

Pinch hitter Ossie Gilhooley, batting for Slocumb, singled to left.sending Roberts speeding around second and on to third base safely. Don Lary singled past second baseman Ray Wilson scoring Roberts. (5-2).

That did not worry Toronto all that much, but Paul Dillon doubled in Gilhooley and Lary to make the score 5-4 and that caused some anxious pacing in the Taoronto dugout. Tom Kearns' two run homerun turned anxiety into disappointment for Toronto and brought joy toi the Angels side of the field.

Vines, restored to the closer came in and retired all three of the batters he faced for his 3rd save of the season giving Anaheim a 6-5 victory.

Other scores;

Oakland 3 New York 2

Seattle 3 Tampa Bay 2
