Angels 1 Tampa 0

Anaheim ran its record on its nine game road trip to 3-1 with a razor thin 1-0 win over Tampa in the first game of three with the Tuna in Miami. Steve Secrist (2-3), the Anaheim starting pitcher, turned in a quality start going 7.1 shutout innings giving up three hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.

The three hits off Secrist all came in the first two innings. With two outs in the first inning Bob Suhr singled and George Maisel reached on an in a dribbler down the third base line that went for a single. Secrist got out of the inning when Mark Pyle grounded out to third baseman Jim Nixon.

In the second inning Secrist allowed a lead off triple to Earl Case. Jim Bradley popped out to shortstop David Marquard. Doc Carr popped out to first baseman Don Lary in foul territory for the big second out and pitcher Gene Valdes struck out.

The Angels scored the only run of the game in the 6th inning.

Don Lary, Tom Kearns and Jim Nixon put three singles together. Lary scored and Nixon drove in his 15th run this season.

Secrist ran into trouble in the eighth inning when he walked Jim Bradley, the lead off batter. Bradley was forced out at second by Doc Carr. The end came when Bill Nophsinger reached on an error by second baseman Bob Randolf.

Right hander Nelson Hines took over. Joel Peterson flied out to right fielder Tom Kearns and Benny Herrera struck out.

Charlie Vines struck out Bob Suhr, got George Maisel on a pop out to shortsop Davis Marquard in foul territory down the left field line amd Mark Pyle grounded out to second baseman Bob Randolf to end the game and give Vines his 6th save.

Texas 9 New York 7


Texas won its second straight game after losing three of four. The two victories restored Texas lead to three games over Anaheim after the Angels dropped the final game in their series with Oakland.

Relief pitcher Snake Cooley got the win a pleasant turn around for Cooley after being hit hard over his last few outings. Cooley, now 5-2, went one scoreless inning recording a strikeout in relief of Scott Donovan (6IP 8H 5R/4ER 1BB/3SO). Steve Ballou picked up his 3rd save going two innings giving up four hits and two runs but allowed four walks and one strikeouts.

Texas had 9 runs on 14 hits and New York collected 12 hits and scored 7 runs.

Dave Belk led the Texas attack with three hits, scored thwo runs and drove on one run. Lou Murphy hit hos 5th homerun among the two hits had in the gsme. Dave Blackwell took the loss (5-2).

Toronto 7 Seattle 0


Toronto won its 6th straight.

Dale Doll started and went nine innings shutting out Seattle on five innings walking two and striking out four.

Fred Marshall hit his 3rd homerun in the first inning and Vic mihalic hit his 4th in the 7th inning.
