Anaheim 6 Texas 3...Anaheim wins showdown series!!!!

Post by jacktoast »

,Anaheim has taken their first place showdown series with Texas by inning the first two games, and if they manage to sweep the slumping Southerners, the will go home with a 8-1 record, an unbelievable achievement when the trip began. The team's batting average was .283 and is now .285 and the staff ERA has also improved from 3.14 to 3.13. Both figures are still tops in the league.

The first game in this series was a power display of solo homeruns predominantly and most of them by the Angels (4 to 1) while game two was a low scoring tight affair until the late innings, when the Angels scored four times in the eighth inning to put the game on ice.

Both pitchers made a small statement in the first inning. twenty four year old right hander Scott Donovan, a product of San Diego State University, gave up a single to Ossie Gilhooley to start the game. Don Lary struck out swinging and Tom Kearns, fooled on a curve ball. sent a one hopper right at second baseman Red Johnson, who started a made to order 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Two time All Star and 1951 Cy Young Award Winner Frank Roberts walked the first batter he faced, Bill Strunk. Harl Loucks bounced a one out single through the infield to left field sending Strunk to third base. Tom Fritz gave Roberts new life by hitting a one-hopper to AL Gold Glove second baseman Troy Uhlaender, who started the Angels verson of the 4-6-3 double play, to answer Texas.

No score after one inning.

Jim Nixon had a lead off single in the top of the 2nd inning for the Angels, but Texas catcher Ted Bettencourt gunned him down attempting to steal second base. Dillon struck out. Troy Uhlaender fouled out to first baseman Henry Gilbert.

Texas broke through against Roberts in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Roberts walked the lead off batter for the second inning in a row. Low Murphy took this free pass. Ted Bettencourt got a big hit sending a line drive over the shortstop's head to leftfield. Murphy was able to go to third base on the play. Red Johnson grounded into the Angels second double play in two innings. Shortstop David Marquard started this 6-4-3 twin killing. Murphy, who walked, scored on the play.

Roberts, one out away from getting out of it with the pitcher at bat made a painful mistake grooving a high fastball to pitcher Scott Donovan, who sent a looping line drive down the left field line for a double. The leftfielder, Gilhooley hustled over to field the ball on one hop, which held the runner at third base. Strunk, batting for the second time in the game, singled in the run. The pitcher, Donovan only went to third base. He was left stranded there when Anderson flied out to Kearns in right field to end the inning.

2-0 Texas, after two innings and the crowd, somewhat smaller than the one for game, one finally got into the game.

Donovan gave up a lead off single to David Marquard to start the third inning. The next two batters, catcher Jim Torres and pitcher Frank Roberts, failed to advance the runner by grounding out weakly to the left side of the infield. Gilhooley picked up his second straight hit of the game, a flair to right field, that was good enough to plate the first run for Anaheim.

Don Lary singled to center field, but centerfielder Lou Murphy gunned down the speedy Gilhooley sliding into third base helped out immensely by a good quick tag applied by third baseman Tom Fritz.

Roberts recorded two strikeouts and got the side out very quickly in the bottom of the 3rd helping his team maintain the offensive momentum.

In the 4th inning the Angels tied the score by breaking out the long ball again in the 4th inning. Paul Dillon hit his 5th of the season, and the Angels' 5th of the series, to put Anaheim on even terms once again.

His blast came with two outs and no one on base and was the 6th given up by Donovan this season.

There was no further scoring until the 8th inning. Anaheim had two hits in the 5th by Torres and Gilhooley but got nothing out of them. Pinch hitter Sheldon Pulido led off the 7th inning with a single but Donovan struck out the side from there giving him seven of the ten he had in the game.

Texas managed only a single by Bettencourt in the bottom of the 7th.

Anaheim has proven itself to be a team that scores a lot of runs in the late inning and they scored four in the 8th inning of this game. A lot happened in the 8th inning. Steve Ballou replaced Donovan (7IP 9H 2R/2ER 0BB/10SO).

After getting no walks from Donovan, Ballou issued two right off the bat. Nixon walked to start the inning. Dillon singled him to second bae. Bob Randolph in a non pinch hitting role after replacing Uhlaender at second in the 7th inning, walked to load the bases with no outs.

Texas decided to play its infield in to cut down the run at the plate if possible. It was not possible because Marquard drove a groundball through the drawn in infield to plate two runs. (Nixon and Dillon) Randolph went to third base and Marquard stole second base without a throw.

Catcher Jim Torres singled in two more runs to make it 6-2 Angels.

FINAL 6-3 Anaheim!

Roberts started the 9th inning for Anaheim going for the complete game but when Tom FAritz doubled he was gone after 8 plus one batter innings, 7H 3R/3ER 3BB/5SO..WP 4-2.

Paul Lopez cam in in this non-save situation and once again after a trip to the minors failed to get three outs. he struck out Murphy but Bettencourt singled to drive in Fritz and that brought in Charlie Vines to put out the small fire. Red Johnson popped out to Lary at first over in foul territory and Witted, batting for Ballou, the pitcher, popped out to Nixon at third base standing on the foul line to end the game and put Anaheim in first place for the first time this season.

Charlie Vines with his 12 straight saves and the 26 he collected IN THE REGULAR season in 1951 give him 38 straight saves in the regular season .Vies saved one game and blew one save in the World Series.

Vines will not be available to pitch in game three against Texas. Nellie Hines will be the closer.
