As August turns ten days old, there are three teams at , or near, the top spot in the American League is what has become a very competitive race. Texas, the new comer to the competition, and the team with the most days in first place and Anaheim share the top spot for the second time this season and Toronto has shaken of a sluggish start and steadily worked its way back into contention.

Baltimore at 18-16 is the only other team with a better than .500 record is three games back and New York sits at 17-17 four games off the pace. Seattle (16-18 -5), Oakland (14-20 -7), and Tampa Bay (-12) bring up the rear.

This season Texas has the best home record; 12-6 and Anaheim the best road record; 11-4.

The homerun leadership is shared by five players with 8; three from Texas, Lou Murphy, Mitchell Anderson, and Harl Loucks, and Tom Kearns of Anaheim and Dick Gooch from Toronto.

RBI; The RBI leader is Dick Gooch of Toronto with 27. Paul Dillon of Anaheim trails by two with 25 and Tom Fritz of Texas by four with 24.

Batting Average; Everett Telemaco is sixteen points ahead in this category with an impressive .355 average. George Daly of Seattle is second with a .339 mark three points in front of Ted Bettencourt at .336 and six in fron t of Texas' Lou Murphy at .333.

Gus Leathers of New York leads in both runs scored (28) and hits (42).

Angels 5 Baltimore 0

The Angels had a team record 30 home wins at home last season, but thus far this year they have been only 10-9 at Albie pearson Park. Frank Roberts stop a one game losing streak and to put it there with a five hit shutout of the Baltimore Tigers. Roberts, 5-2 with a 3.02 ERA, struck out nine and walked two to post his first complete game shutout of the year and his second complete game.

Anaheim used their team speed to score two runs off Baltimore starting pitcher in the 1st inning.

Lead off batter Ossie Gilhooley doubled. The next batter Don Lary struck out. Jim Nixon walked.

Gilhooley and Nixon pulled off a double steal, Gillhooley stealing third (11th() and Nixon second (10th) Paul Dillon struck out but Tom Kearns drove in both runners with a sinble to right field. Goff struck out Troy Uhlaender to strike out the side.

2-0 Anaheim.

Anaheim added two more in the sixth inning. Don Lary and Jim Nixon singled and paul Dillon tripled. Jim Nixon's 5th homerun in the 8th 8inning off releiver Steve mcDonald (3rd allowed in 8.1innings pitched) capped off the scoring.

Roberts retired the side in order in the first with one strikeout, the lead off batter catcher Fred McCormick. The right hander walked Howdy Mosquera with two outs in the second. Mosquera was then thrown out attempting to steal second base by new catcher Walter Blair to allow Roberts to face only three batters officially.

Pitcher Dick Goff gpot the first hit off Roberts in the 3rd inning with two outs but McCormick ground out to end the inning.

The 4th inning was Roberts biggest test of the game. Charlie Brooks singled and stole second base. Dutch Becquer drew a walk and Doc Ott singled to right rield. Tom Kearns got to the ball quickly and got it to the cut off man stopping Brooks at thrid which loaded the bases. Roberts struck out, Bill Bladt, Howdy Mosquera, and Joe Cocreham to strand all three runners for his third fourth and fifth strikeout of the game. The score remained 2-0 Anaheim.

Goff had another one out single in the 5th to make his two hits the most productive day for any Baltimore batter.

Mosquera singled to start the 7th but Cocreham struck out for the second time and Julio Dougherty ground into a double play started by second baseman Troy Uhlaender (4-6-3).

Roberts had to pitch around an error by first baseman Don Lary in the 9th but did so striking out Turner Wilhelm and getting Bladt to ground out to marquard at short and Al Dantonio ended it by bouncing one to Lary at first base.
