Post by basilrathbonejr »

The Detroit Mustangs are 19-13, one game better than Tampa Bay in the American League standings, after victories in the first two games of a three game series, in Tampa Bay.

Detroit won game one of the series 5-0. Detroit starting pitcher Fred Wyatt got on base and scored twice in the game while coming within one out of a complete game.

Wyatt retired the first ten batters he faced, letting his good defense do the work for him. Then Yank Iorg with one out in the fourth inning with Tampa's first hit of the game, a single to right. The inning came to a quick end as Zapustas grounded into a double play started by second baseman Art Harrelson.

Ken Mackenzie had a single to start the fifth inning but Wyatt struck out two of the next three batters to quell any thought of a rally.

Wyatt walked Mike Robinson in the sixth and Zapustas in the seventh. Wyatt retired three straight in the sixth and got Mackenzie to ground into another Mustang double play, this one initiated by shortstop J.C. Caithamer, the Mustangs infield's league best 27th of the season to end that threat.

Wyatt took a two hit shutout into the ninth inning leading in the game 5-0 and retired the first two routinely before running out of gas. Yank Iorg doubled to centerfield centerfield. Zapustas singled off Wyatt's glove and Wyatt walked pinch hitter Al Holly to load the bases and bring up the tying run.

Ben Beckham came in to rescue Wyatt and got Gerald Perez to ground out third baseman Mike Leifer to end the game.

Along the way Detroit scored five run on eleven hits to give Wyatt ample support.

The Mustangs scored one in the first when Harrelson doubled with one out. Leifer singled past shortstop Dave Howard and Harrelson attempted to score on the play from second but was shot down at the plate by a great throw by Yank Iorg.

John Gonzalez followed with a single that advanced Leifer to thirdbase. Leifer scored on a Baltimore Chop off the plate fielded by the pitcher who did not throw to first to get Richie Taylor.

1-0 Detroit.

Leifer singled in the 3rd inning with one out after Harrleson had been caught stealing to start the frame. Leifer stole second (3rd) Gonzalez struck out. Taylor launced one deep to left this time for a two run homerun, his4th off Roy Helf, the 6th given up by Self in 46 innings pitched.

3-0 Detroit.

Game two was a total slugfest in the early going. John Gonzalez hit a two run homerun in the first off Gary Adams and Gonzalez then hit number two and his 6th of the season in the third with the bases empty.

Detroit scored a run in the second when Thevenow reached on an error and scored on pitcher Miquel Link's sacrifice fly.

Tampa took advantage of some uncharacteristically bad fielding by Detroit. Pat Rochefort reached on a two base fielding error by John Gonzalez and scored on a single by Ken Mackenzie. 5-4 Detroit.
