DICK HOWSER LEAGUE RECAPS

Post by larrysiegfried20 »

The American league has a dandy pennant race going after the first 25 games have been put in the books. Three teams went into action on the first of August tied for first place. Two of those teams played each other, Boston and Detroit, in Detroit while Tampa Bay took on Seattle in Seattle.

Both games saw the home team pullout walk off wins in comeback fashion.

Both starting pitchers were i n top form in Seattle. Kewpie Fisher did not get the win, but did go eight and one third shutout innings, allowing just one hit. He struck out eleven but six walks were problematic.

in the second inning Fisher escaped a bases loaded jam of his own making after getting the forst two batters of the inning out. Fisher walked Dave Howard, hit Ken McKenzie with a pitch and walked Yank Iorg to load the bases before getting Fred Yiunbg to bounce out to second baseman Dick McNeely.

The only hit he allowed came one inning later when Darryl Kipper lead off the 3rd inning with a double to centerfield. Fisher proceeded to struke out the next two batters, John Partridge and Mike Zapustas, and get Cass Hutton to fly out to left field.

Boston starting pitcher Fred young was also sharpo, going seven and a third innings, six hits, only two walks and recording seven strikeouts.

When Fisher departed with one out in the eight inning, Tom Hadley came in as he repalcement and got the final two outs. He was rewarded with the win (2-0) when Seattle rallied in the bottom of the ninth for the win.

Reloiever Bobby Rader replaced Young and did not fare well. Rader faced ust two batters, and reired neith of them. He walked the fisrt batter, Jack Wilson and gave up a game winning walk off homerun to Jim Lollar.

It was Lollar's first of the season and the fourth goven up by Rader this season in just seven and one third innings.

Detroit 3 Boston 2

Detroit faced. the Boston G-Men, one of the other two teams tied for first place, at home, in Mustang Stadium, in the first of a three game series. The Mustangs won for the fourth straight time, and the sixth time in the last seven games, to take over sole possession of first place in the American League.

Both teams featured good pitching in this one although Detroit starter Art Gaudet stsarted slowy allowing two runs on a walk and three singles in the first inning to fall behind 2-0.

Gaudet walked the game's lead off batter, Willy Shiffell, then gave up singles to John Parrrella. Joe Crawford and Liz Baird before getting out of the inning.

Gaudet would pitch for six and two third innings giving up seven hits and only the two first inning runs allowed with four walks and an impressive ten strikeouts thanks to a moving fastball and a sharp breaking pitch.

Pat Farrell, the opposing hurler was a painful thorn in the side for Detroit. Over his eight innings Farrell allowed one run on five hits, walked one, and struck out seven.

Detroit's only run came in the bottom of the third inning when Mike Leifer doubled to left field with no outs. Gaudet, the pitcher, successfully advanced him to third base with one out where he was able to score on a gound out to second baseman Rex Kepshire.

Detroit broke thorugh with two runs in the ninth inning off Farrell's replacement, Dick Kendall, a right hander.

Arthur Harrelson doubled to left field, just missing a homerun. One out later John Gonzalez, batting just .152 thus far, drove in his team high 13th run, to tie the game 2-2 with his only hit of the game, a single.

Catcher George Maloney advance Gonzalez with a single to left field.

Richie Taylor struck out for the second out.

Mike Leifer came throiugh with a game winning walk off single to send the Detroit fans home happy.
