DETROIT 2 SEATTLE 1

Post by basilrathbonejr »

Detroit kept pace with co-leader Tampa Bay by edging Seattle 2-1 thanks to three timely double plays behind starting pitcher Roy Berry (2-3), who allowed just four hits over eight innings.

Two of the four hits Berry gave up and one of the walks issue by the right hander resulted in the only run scored by Seattle in the 5th inning. Dykes Randal and Steve Paulsen had singles sandwiched around a walk to Jack Wilson. Berry struck out the side in that inning.

The double plays came in the first, third and eighth inning.

In the first inning Ted Leon grounded into a double play after John Hangling started by second baseman Arthur Harrelson. After Dick McNealy singled leading off the 6th with a single Hangling had a one hopper to shortstop J. C. Caithamer who stared a 6-4-3 double play and the third came in the eight inning after a tiring Perry walked Jack Wilson but was able to induce Andy Jones to bounced one to Harrelson who started the third DP of the game for Detroit, a season high for the Mustangs on defense this season.

With Perry in complete control two runs on nine hits for Detroit was just enough to take the win. The Mustangs went ahead in the third when Freddie Nehf singled to centerfield and stole the first of three base he stole in the game (10,11,12) and scored on Harrleson's double. 1-0 Detroit.

One inning later Detroiut scored he run that would be the difference in the game off Lou Miley (LP 2-3). Miley walked Mike Leifer and Art Jorgenson with one out and catcher Ron Colins singled in the run (Leifer).

Bob Eastwick pitched the ninth inning for his 11th save of the season.

Note; I wrote up several games earlier this morning but lost them due to line conditions. Sorry. Will effort to cover more teams as the season goes along.
