Hey all. I've read many posts from over the years and the consensus is power rules; particularly RH power. Is that really true? I prefer the A+ Con A- Pow guys vs the B, A+ guys. Now, I'm not talking about the extraordinary players, but generally. In alot of my leagues the high Con guys impress with OBP, Runs, and decent Pow. (20+ HR) A couple of my Leagues have teams with 1 or 2 A+ Pow guys and several A type Con guys and they are great teams, especially when you factor in walks vs SO's and OBP. The runs scored seem to correlate. Sure it might not look as good as leading the league in HR's, but is it really as effective for championship runs? Is this new or am I just noticing more as I dig deeper with more time to spend here on SimD. I appreciate all comments.
Thanks, Ed
Pow vs Con
Re: Pow vs Con
I think a lot owners overestimate power. Whether you like contact hitters, power hitters, balanced hitters, or some mix of the three, the underestimated component to a player's and a team's offensive success is speed.
Re: Pow vs Con
In my limited experience, if you have good power you for some reason get decent contact even if the contact rating isn't good. Take this guy's 2008 as an example, he's C+/A+

A C+ really has no business hitting .271 with a .334 OBP, and in my opinion I've gotten better contact out of C+ contact guys than you'd ever get power production from a C+ power guy.
Would agree with Willy though that speed is undervalued.

Re: Pow vs Con
Based on my experience The A+ power pitchers do well if their Con is high enough. Pitchers That have A/C stats have never done well for me. But I have had C+A+ pitchers dominate including winning the Cy Young award. As far as hitting I have had C+A+ hitters that have been effective hitting 6th or 7th in the line up with 20 HR and 90+ RBIS. This player was also consistent year after year. The high contact player with B range power was one of my best lead of hitters with over 3000 hits and ended his career second all time for SB. This Player was my first HOF player. The A health was also a big factor as well. I also believe what round they are drafted in has a contributing factor (just my opinion based on Experience).
Re: Pow vs Con
Id add that bunting is also an undervalued metric. A high speed, contact, and bunt player can be absolutely lethal at the top of a lineup.
Re: Pow vs Con
Big caveat that over the course of his career he's been a bad hitter (as you'd expect with his grades) and this season's sample is still very small (61 ABs as of when I'm posting this) but I feel like this is just an extreme example of what I see a decent amount: http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player ... d=14006008
D+/A+ hitter, and he's mashing (.344/.369/.639) slash line. Again, over the long haul of his career he hasn't been very good, but I feel like I've more commonly seen bad contact hitters overperform their grades for a stretch like this than I have low power hitters.

Re: Pow vs Con
Really doesn't matter. The key is to get at least B in either contact or power when you have A+ in the other. As has been mentioned speed is really the biggest key to success if you have A+ B or B A+. Of course higher is better in all categories.
