Pitcher Potential

Post by Mateogrande »

Where do you long timers see this guy peaking at for velo and control? I realize there are variable but is A- A- a stretch? Reasonable? What about A A?

Eventually he'll likely make A/A- and A- overall. If he can avoid the dreaded OS22 year of sub par improvements, then A overall is possible. Worst case is A-/A-

What do you guys think, will these two young pitchers be better served as being my top 1 or 2 minor league prospects or pitching 200 innings in the bigs?

Get them 25 ICs in the bigs (the first 25 go to vel/cont) then the rest in the minors with one of your top slots (most ICs in the minors go to vel/cont).

I would basically flip them at about the halfway point of the season, and surround them in the bigs with good mentors (upgrade the two 28 year olds to red letter mentors from the wire or if you can get them cheaply in a trade).

You have the makings of a solid rotation with both of them and Arnold, so I would set the rotation up:

Arnold
Canavan/Quintana
Walker
Red Letter Mentor
Red Letter Mentor

The rest can go to the pen.

You also might consider flipping Walker at the midway point to the minors too to focus his development on vel/cont, perhaps with a guy like Dietz/Wayne/Combs...

Awesome info. Thanks. Starting my 3rd season now and had no idea about the first 25 ICs in the majors. Again great info and thanks!.

I project Jackson to reach 79 in both Control and Velocity. He would have to be very lucky to reach A.
Edit: Seems he just flipped from B- to B in Control, so I'll change the Control projection to 75.

Agree with the half season in the majors. But do make sure that the mentoring is OK, otherwise they will miss out on ICs in the majors. I'd aim for at least 2 mentors in the starting rotation (B or better mentoring score) and in the bullpen. Do check your game logs, the mentoring score in the Rotation&Bullpen view is not reliable (players will only count as mentors if they have pitched in the last 7 days, which is not always the case with a 5th starter).

If I rebuild, the mentoring score is the only thing that counts for a veteran pitcher. I will pick up guys with A or A+ mentoring score from waivers and start them if I don't have them on my team.
