Seattle @ Washington

The Washington Senators played host to the Seattle Sea Walks at spacious Griffith Stadium for a three game series before departing on a road trip to Cleveland to face off with one of three clubs they are currently tied with for first place. But before all that the Senators had busy to take care of with Seattle.

Washington batted for ten innings to get a 8-7 victory in game one, then fell 8-5 to Seattle in game two to set up a rubber game in the series finale. Mel McKnight, Washington's ace started for the Senaotrd on the hill and Dan Tatum was the Seattle hurler.

McKnight (2-0 2.73 ERA) and Tatum were both sharp over the first five innings. McKnight did not give up a hit until Chuck Bedgood led off the fifth inning with a triple to deep right field. Charlie Bramhall got the run in with a fly ball to right field.

The Senators finally got to Tatum who had allowed just two hits, in the bottom of the sixth inning. Tatum issued a walk to lead off batter Danny Mullins to start the inning. D.J. Edmondson, getting the start in the outfield, doubled off the left field wall to tie the game 1-1. Edmondson was then thrown out at the plate by right fielder Chuck Bedgoos on a single by Bob Machado. Shane Smallwood put Washington in front for the first iime driving in Machado with a single to left field.

Seattle responded with three runs in the seventh inning to take a 4-2 lead ad knock McKnight out of the game. John Henrich doubled and Stu Schwenk hit his first homerun of the season off McKnight, the second round tripper hit off the Washington ace in 29.2 innings this season.

Bramhall walked following the homerun, advanced to second on a ground out to first base and scored the third run of the inning on a single by pitcher Dan Tatum. 4-2 Seattle.

Alan Fox replace McKnight (6.2IP 4H 4 runs, all earned, 3BB 6SO) with two outs and gave up a single that got past Mark Pfiester at third base, before getting Oscar Augustine to ground out to Pfiester to end the inning.

Pinch hitter Hal Brinker batted for the pitcher Allan Fox with one out in the seventh and singled. Brinker stole second base and scored on Edmondson's second run scoring hit of the game to pull Washington within one run.

One inning later Washington scored twice to take a 5-4 lead. Machado drew the fourth walk issued by Tatum leading off walk the inning for Washington. Smallwood singled to left field signaling the end for Tatum.

Bob Biancalana replaced Tatum (7IP 8H 5R/5ER 4BB/6SO LP 1-2).

David Calderone doubled to centerfield driving in two runs to put Washington ahead.

Eddie Bell who wroked the final two innings recording two strikeout was the winning pitcher (3-0).
