Cleveland 8 Seattle 7

The early going in the American League has four teams off to competitive starts. First place Cleveland (8-3) maintained its one game lead with its seventh win in ten game with a 8-7 victory over Seattle.

In a game laced with homeruns Cleveland's Billy Cross survived for six innings allowing eight hits and four runs walked one and two strikeouts. Eddie Adair came in for his fourth save despite allowing a lead off homerun to Keith Stricker's first of the season in the ninth inning.

Seattle hit four homeruns all told; Oscar Augustine hit his second in the fourth inning, Chuck Bedgood hit two, he hit his second in the 4th inning, and his 3rd, a two run shot came in the eighth. Bob Akerfelds hit his fourth with two outs and no one on in the sixth inning.

Cleveland's Steve Cline hit his first in the third inning with no one on and no one out. Dutch Medeiros hit his second with one on and two outs in the first inning. Medeiros had four runs batted in in the game.

Oakland 7 Kansas City 0

This was the third straight win for Oakland.

Charlie DeShong threw a complete game two hit sutout with three walks and nine strikeouts for Oakland. Oakland's catcher Bill Good had both hits, singles in the sixth and eighth innings and one of the three walks off DeShong.

Kory Beauchamp hit two homeruns in the support of DeShong driving in four of the seven runs.

Washington 3 Boston 2

Washington (7-4) won its second straight game over Boston (4-7) to keep itself in the hunt. Ray Ridzik singled in front of left fielder George Smith off Boston starting pitcher Bob Pearson (LP1-2). Pearson walked Andy McCament to put two on with no one out. After Danny Mullins was called out on strikes Bob Macado singled past second baseman Tommy Jackson to score Ridzik with the games first run.

Boston tied the score in the bottom of the 4th inning. Smith doubled to right field and stole second base. Bernie Nye hit a hot smash to third baseman Mark Meers, who made a great play to rob Nye of a hit, but Smith did score the tying run on the play.

With the score still tied in the seventh inning, pinch hitter Tony Lee drew a one-out walk from Pearson. McCament doubled to left field and McCament singled in both Lee and McCament to give Washington a 3-1 lead.

Alta Egan hit a solo homerun leading off the eighth inning for Boston's only run.

Eddie Bell faced three batters in the ninth inning to earn his fourth save. The Washington closer walked Bill Henderson with two outs and catcher Andy McClament, the star of this game, threw Henderson out attempting to steal second base, to end the game.

Anaheim 5 Toronto 3

Jack Smith (1) and Fred Martin (2) homered for Anaheim and Ken Brett hit his 2nd for Toronto.

Carl Pierre was the winning pitcher (1-0) in relief. Charlie Kenna picked up his first save.
